(AUSTIN) – The chancellor of the Texas State University System announced today that Dr. Ricardo Maestas has resigned as president of Sul Ross State University and Rio Grande College and will be reassigned as special assistant to the chancellor. Dr. Quint Thurman, provost and vice president for academic and student affairs at Sul Ross, will serve as interim president until a new president is appointed.
"I appreciate Dr. Maestas' service to Sul Ross State University and his leadership in stabilizing the university's enrollment and garnering financial support for the university from the state and private donors, and I wish him well," said Chancellor Brian McCall.
Dr. Perry Moore, TSUS vice chancellor for academic affairs, will immediately begin a national search for the next president of Sul Ross State University. Dr. Moore will soon meet with a variety of stakeholders both within Sul Ross and from the community to explore the opportunities and challenges facing the university, and the qualities needed in the next president.
Moore will also solicit nominations for members of an Advisory Search Committee that will assist in the evaluation of candidates. The advisory committee will be appointed by Donna N. Williams, chairman of the Board of Regents of the Texas State University System.
